AS/EN 9100 AVIATION SERIES – QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
In Defence Industry, very high standards are required for the aviation field where the security conditions have become very important.
Date: Issue 11 - June 2008
AS/EN/JISQ 9100 is an internationally accepted Quality System Standard especially for the aviation industry. This Standard, which is known as AS 9100 in North America, known as EN 9100 in Europe and known as JISQ 9100 in Japan is strongly supported by the main producers of the sectors such as Airbus, GEAE, Rolls_Royce and Boeing. AS 9100 certification has become a requirement that is demanded by the mentioned producers from the sub-contractors.
AS 9100 standard has been developed by the American Aviation Quality Group (AAQG), International Aviation Quality Group and the other leaders of the aviation sector so as to encourage high technologies in every fields of aviation. AS 9100 is the application of ISO 9000 Quality System in the aviation industry. In the supply chain; especially focuses on quality, security and technology are focused on.
The Aviation Sector provides the safety and security of the air planes, equipments, materials, services and activity by means of its clear demands and controls. This means, it relies very much on the providers who have effective management systems. Actually the buyers of the aviation equipments lay down the providers’ having AS 9100, AS 9120 and AS 9003 as a condition.
AS 9100 : Quality Management System Requirements for the design of the aviation products
AS 9110 : Quality Management Systems Requirements for Maintenance organization.
AS 9120: Quality Management Systems Requirements fort he stock distributors
AS 9003: Control & Test Control & Test
AS 9006: Software attachment for the AS 9100, which is applicable for the aviation.
An Overview on AS 9100 Standards
Adopting the quality management system is a strategic decision of the organization. An organization’s designing and applying a quality management system originates from various needs, special targets, the supplied products, the applied processed, the greatness and structure of the that organization.
The conditions defined in this quality management system are complementary for the conditions defined fort he products. It can be used for making an evaluation whether the organization meets the customer and the regulation conditions that have been set by the bodies in the organization and the parties, including the certification bodies.
During developing these standards, the quality management principles that are included in ISO 9000 and ISO 9004 shall be taken into consideration.
This Standard encourages the adoption of the process approach for developing the quality management system, its application and improvement its effectiveness for meeting the customers’ conditions and strengthening the customer satisfaction. An organization has to determine many interrelated activities and conduct them so that it carries out its functions effectively. An activity which use the resources and used for turning the inputs into outputs can be accepted as a process. The output of a process can be accepted as the input of the another process. Using a system of the processes in the organization, the interrelation of the processes and determination as well as their management can be referred as “process approach”.
An advantage of the process approach is its control over the relations between individual processes and their combinations as well as interactions in the system of processes. Such an approach stresses the importance of the followings when it is used with the quality management system:
Understanding and comparing the conditions
Need for considering the process in terms of the added values it provides.
Obtaining the outputs of the performance and affectivity of the process
Improving the processes based on the objective measures
This Standard includes the quality management system for the organizations that:
Need to have the ability to meet the requirements of the customer and the regulation conditions consistently
b)
aim strengthening the customer satisfaction by means of the system application including conformity assurance for the consumers conditions and regulation conditions inforce currently the processes for improving the system continually.

Closing remarks:
Certification to the AS9100 standard provides; Qualification to be considered as an aerospace supplier, Public recognition, Internal validation, Independent feedback to foster continual improvement
AS 9100 can be applied for all fields such as equipment designing and manufacturing, providing the spare parts of aircrafts, the sanctions in the airports and airway, maintenance and flight sanctions and managing the cargoes.
Today there are still deficiencies about configuration methods, safety and security in the space and aviation products that include complex and high technologies. When the quality system requirements special to the sector are determined, ISO 9001:2000 revision that is based on the advanced quality systems and that is appropriate for establishing an effective quality management system should be depended on, and it should be used as a guide way for this issue.
