Designing the CBRN for Naval Application
The design basis and functional requirements of naval CBRN monitoring systems depend on the type of the vessel and mission to be accomplished. Detection capability requirements vary from single point chemical detection to full scale CBRN detection. The amount of detection points is typically defined by size of the vessel but also other CBRN performance, such as CBRN filtration capability. Indoor detection i.e. filter condition monitoring, is required whenever filtration system is utilized.
Environics has wide range of detectors and sensors to fulfill even the toughest naval requirements. The structure and modularity of the Environics detection systems not only provide the high system upgradability but also guarantees the redundancy and appropriate communication interfaces to ship automation systems.
Chemical detection
Chemical detection is based on ChemProFX that is the latest in state-of-the-art chemical detection and identification systems. They are ultra fast first alarm/post attack unit for detection/monitoring of all kind of harmful chemicals. They are designed to detect chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and toxic industrial compounds/materials (TICs/TIMs) ChemProFX provides continuous operation without the need of expendable desiccant cartridges, like other IMS systems. Detectors have no expendables, such as desiccant cartridges or sieves, and are designed for low life cycle and operating costs.
Biological Detection
Biological threats on naval applications are detected with ENVIBioScout that combines three functions in a single device: it monitors continuously ambient air, triggers early warning for detected potential airborne biological threats including bacterial, viral and rickettsial agents and toxins and initiates automatic air sample collection when a biological alarm is issued.
ENVIBioScount utilizes proven real-time bio detection technology in which fluorescence and elastic scattering signals from airborne particles are excited with laser. ENVIBioScount is featured with robust construction combined to high sensitivity, good selectivity for intentional bioaerosol releases and fast response according to gathered and analyzed data on detected particles. Durability, simple use and maintenance with low lifecycle costs are valued features for a bioaerosol detector operating in demanding conditions in military and civil defence.
Radiological and Nuclear detection
Radiation detection system provides wide range gamma monitoring for larger vessels. System displays the radiation levels from each detector position.
System Communication
The system component with the brand name Master Module is a PC based data processing unit running in the Linux environment. Master Module provides an interface (TCO/IP) to the ship control and automation systems whenever needed. The diverse data received from measuring devices are harmonized and filtered in order to optimize the data transfer. In a normal situation only the relevant information travels in the telecommunication network. By means of Master Module it is possible to communicate with various measuring devices in great detail when needed; e.g. configure the sensitivities and alarm limits replace libraries etc. Data can be transferred in the system wirelessly or by using a fixed network. In the system supplied 3G, GPRS and TETRA networks, radio modems WLANs have been used.
Control Center / CBRN Console Software
For control center EnviScreen Operix 2010 software is used to show the real-time status of the detectors and measuring devises on, for example, a map template, imitating the operation principle of traffic lights. When needed, graphical history data can be shown or the event and alarm log files can be browsed through. More extensive systems can perform various simulations utilizing commercial and non-commercial methods for determining danger zones such as ATP-45 as well as dispersion modeling methods such as HPAC or SILAM 4D modeling. EnviScreen Manifix 2010 is used for purpose. The EnviScreen Manifix 2010 also comprises functions that comply with the NATO ATP-45 standard. The system produces and receives messages in ATP-45 format. By means of the situation management tool, ATP-45 standard compliant danger zones can be calculated and created and danger zone data (messages) can be forwarded and received.
