2. In 2009 Hema Defence took a sound achievement in Tank Transporter and Semi-Trailer Project and became the prime contractor. Within this concept, Could you please enlighten us the current status in this project and your capabilities, technological competence in this vehicle?
In the 45 vehicle Tank Transporter and Semi-Trailer Project, excluding the Scania make cab the rest will be manufactured in Turkey. The Scania company is a large firm that has proven itself in the world in the manufacture of truck and similar military vehicles. Their annual production in trucks is around 6,000. We chose to co-operate with Scania because it was the most suitable company that could provide all of the technical features that SSM wanted for this project. In addition, with its service and spare parts network throughout Turkey there won’t be a maintenance and spare parts problem for the vehicles. Hema will be the primary contractor for this project and the integration of the vehicles with the semi-tractors and the manufacture of other parts will be undertaken at Hema’s facilities at Çerkezköy.
-Within this Project could you please inform us your sub contractors?
The sub-contractors in this Project are sound companies that have extensive experience in their own field. We are co-operating with Scania for the cab, Alt?ordu for the trailer, Alt?nçekiç for the crane, TEKSAV for the lighting and blackout systems.
3. It is known that Hema has activities in Special Purpose Tactical Wheeled Armored Vehicles Project. Could you please inform us about 6x6 vehicles that you designed with Morozov?
On the subject of the 6x6 Special Purpose Tactical Wheeled Armored Vehicle (SPTWAV), the intellectual and property rights of the design belong to Turkey and are not subject to any restrictions and the Morozov Design Bureau of the Ukraine that has designed and manufactured thousands of vehicles in the Eastern Block as our solution partner has only provided engineering support for the design phase.
The training for the Turkish engineers and workers and the design and manufacture of the vehicle’s body took place at the Çerkezköy facilities. The purpose of the indigenous design and the local development model was to develop the vehicle according to the customer’s requirements therefore, after the manufacture of the vehicle’s body parts, the complete prototype will be done at the Hema Çerkezköy facilities.
On the sub-systems of the vehicle, the Deutz engine and Allison transmission as power palette was used as they have proven their quality throughout the world and are strong in terms of logistics and spare parts. The Hema Hortsman design was used for hydro preumatic suspension and will be completely manufactured at Hema Endüstri facilities and as the original designer and manufacturer to leading automotive companies in the world Hema will use its steering wheel, brakes and axes as local manufacture.
The ease of use in the vehicle’s design, its mobility and in terms of inner seating the designs of world leading vehicles were analyzed and in order to increase the capacity of the vehicle’s inner use the power palette was placed on the vehicle’s front and a wide space was left for the use of the mid section and for the placement and integration of other sub-systems.
With the modular design the necessary power palette and suspension’s expansion can take place and the joint parts to be used for the 8x8 will form a vehicle family.
In order to narrow the target and increasing maneuverability the vehicle’s profile has been kept low. In addition, as a result of increasing maneuverability the repose radius is very low.
In terms of domestic manufacturing and high local contribution rate, maximum local contribution in the ballistic protection system has been applied and where required a ballistic and mine protection system where an expandable level 2 and level 3 mine resistant systems that is required by the existing specifications and that will not involve large costs and additional weight to the vehicle has been developed.
As to one of the most important vehicles of the Project, the CBRN vehicle, together with TÜB?TAK, a system that has a completely indigenous design and where the intellectual and property rights are with Turkey has been developed.
TÜB?TAK will undertake the design, manufacture and integration of the CBRN system and with the dual lidor system the chemical gases and war materials that disseminate in the form of aerosol will be detected and diagnosed. In addition, since biological war material agents are also in the form of aerosol, its detection will also be included in the system’s software and in terms of the distance of the gas cloud it will be determined with the system.
Despite the rise in costs in the LIDAR group, there are two laser systems and through this system war materials in the form of both gas and aerosol will be detected and diagnosed from a distance of 15 km.
Since it is impossible to determine the direction of a gas cloud of a system that is not active and because it can only be an estimate, the LIDAR system is being used. The system’s prototype has been completed and experimental tests have been successfully completed.
With the standby power unit developed together with TÜB?TAK Energy Institute, the electrical battery that is only available in the most advanced vehicles in the world, the equipment functions of the 6x6 SPTWAV, including climate control, will operate a minimum 2.5 hours without interruption with the temperature and fume emission kept to a minimum level.
These systems have the objective of having the most modern intellectual and property rights that belong completely to Turkey for the Turkish Armed Forces with an unrestrictive vehicle production.
4. Could you please enlighten us the other activities performed and projects carried out by HEMA over the years? What is your assessment on your R&D activities?
As noted earlier, HEMA has been involved in the defence industry for 30 years. It is one of the 3-4 leading companies in Turkey that has been given a permit for land systems production. As a forward looking company HEMA will first of all enter all projects at the production and design level of land systems requested by the SSM and the MND. On this subject, within the last 2 years of the projects opened by the SSM and which HEMA has entered, it came in second in the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle Project and the primary contractor in the Tank Transporter and Semi-Trailer Project. HEMA will use this opportunity not only domestically but also overseas through the necessary marketing activities. At the present time we are continuing our 4x4 and 6x6 armored vehicles prototype production at our Çerkezköy facilities.
HEMA gives particular importance to R&D. In this respect 60 engineers are continuously using every technical opportunity in R&D activities in the defence and automotive industries.
Domestic activities on design and manufacture of all sub-systems to be used in armored vehicles are continuing whereby the local contribution rate is being kept at the maximum level.
