UEKAE Provides End to End Secure Communication.
ALMOST UNDETECTABLE!
No doubt that 20
Date: Issue 10 - March 2008
It is almost impossible to intercept these Radars!
UEKAE produced totally national three different radar systems which apply Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technique: Coastal surveillance (SAMRAD), harbour surveillance (LIMRAD) and ship navigation radars (GEMRAD). These radar systems with target detection range up to 66km (36 n.m.) are compatible to be used in surveillance networks and are capable of remote configuration and remote target tracking by applying the Ethernet interface. They also utilize Low Probability Intercept (LPI) technology, which is very important in today’s world.
Totally National
Since such big investments always carry huge risks, encouraging facts were needed to give the start; and UEKAE pushed the button with the National Ship Project, as well as many others, to satisfy the Naval needs nationally. All the three Radar systems were developed by the native engineers experienced especially in software engineering, RF and signal processing.
Another secure communication product much attractive as the Radars, is the Crypto Mobile Phone, since the GSM is the most widely used wireless mobile communication system in today’s world. The natural user expectation from such a technology is to provide truly secure communication and to protect the calls against access by others i.e. eliminating chance of eavesdropping and interception by third parties.
Do you think GSM is Really Secure?
GSM network voice/data is only encrypted between mobile phone and base station: From the base station, the voice/data is routed through the network in plain mode via the normal fixed network – often via microwave link. Hence the data transmitted through air interface can be easily intercepted by using some appropriate equipment.
UEKAE Crypto GSM Provides End-to-End Secure Communication
Since the GSM network has serious security flaws, TUBITAK UEKAE designed “UEKAE - Crypto GSM Phone” with the following features:
• Voice/data hardware based encryption for end-to-end secure communication through GSM network
• Interoperability with NATO SCIP compatible devices
Features
• Operating in GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz standard
• Plain Voice/Data communication
• Plain SMS transmission/reception
• English and Turkish language options
• Personal Information Management Tools: Addressbook, Calendar, Tasks etc.
• Applications: Clock, Calculator, System Information, Notes, Games, World, Help Browser etc.
• Up to last 50 call records
• Different ring profile options
Technical Data
• Weight: ≤ 250 gr
• Size: ≤ 130x55x25 mm (HeightxWidthxDepth)
• Temperature: 0/+50°C
• Talk Time: ≥ 90 minutes
• Secure Talk Time: ≥ 60 minutes
• Standby Time: ≥ 1440 minutes
• EMI/EMC: ETSI EN 301 489-07
• Prerequisite: GSM 9600 bps asynchronous transparent circuit switched data service must be available
And the operator dependent services of Crypto Mobile Phone are the call forwarding, call barring, call wait, and caller ID services.
Now we will have a look at another secure communication which has been used for secure communication between NATO and non-NATO countries and won the Creativity and Innovation Grand Award, 2007, FORESC-II.
Reliable & Secure Data Communication over HF/ VHF/ UHF
Recent developments in DSP technology and HF waveforms have enabled manufacturers to create HF-modems that have speeds up to 9600 bps (or even 19.200 kbps in a 6 KHz ISB channels). The availability of these "high-speed" modems have opened up the use of HF-Radio for TCP/IP (like) services and applications.
Accordingly, UEKAE has developed FORESC II for reliable & secure data communication over HF/VHF/UHF.
FORESC-II
Some specifications of FORESC-II are as below:
- Linux based HF/VHF/UHF data terminal and server device
- Data Communications over HF/VHF/UHF using NATO Standardization Agreement Profile for High
Frequency (HF) Radio Data Communications (STANAG 5066)
- Reliable binary data (i.e. images files, executable files, ofice documents, text files etc.) transfer capability
- Supports e-mail messaging with industry standard TCP/IP based e-mail clients (Outlook Express, Netscape,
Mozilla, Evolution, ...) over HF/VHF/UHF using STANAG 5066
- Supports industry standard clients (FTP, Chat, Ping, Telnet, ...)
- HF client application support defined in STANAG 5066 Annex F (HFChat, mail messaging [CFTP/HMTP])
- Point to point TCP/IP traffic transport by using STANAG 5066
- Online compression and encryption of transmission data
- Standard Encryption Library with a wide variety of algorithms
- Multilanguage support (optional)
- Secure voice transferring
- Remote Control Software (Modem and Radio Control)
- Node-to-Node communication and LAN connection
- Interoperability: Interoperable with all other STANAG 5066 based systems.
- Supports different transmission modes:
* non-ARQ: Non-reliable data transmission (broadcast)
* ARQ: Reliable data transmission. Packages are checked whether they reach the destination or not
UEKAE, Turkish Research Institute of Electronics and Cyrptology
The National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEAKE), an affiliate of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, produces and applies scientific and technological solutions with its qualified human resources and internationally accepted infrastructure in the areas of information security, communications and advanced electronics. UEKAE works on joint projects together with private sector companies and government authorities by utilizing the TEMPEST, Acoustics, Common Criteria and Cryptographic Algorithm Design and Test Centers and Product Development, Electronic Warfare, Microelectronics and Optoelectronics departments.
