ASELSAN’s ‘Fairy’ Among the Top 6!
Robot Teams Will Face Off in Australia
ASELSAN, having successfully passed the semi-finals with its unmanned land vehicle it has named
Tarih: Issue 23 - November 2010
Team “Cappadocia” formed under the leadership of ASELSAN was picked among the first ten from among the world giants in the elimination round held at the end of 2009 with the system solution it had prepared. In addition to ASELSAN, teams from the U.S., Australia, Japan and Canada that passed the initial elimination round presented their capabilities to a United States and Australian jury with system demonstrations and presentations in the second round of the competition. Team Cappadocia succeeded in becoming one of the six teams to earn a place in the final along with the United States, Japan and Australia in the elimination round held last June and won an award of 50,000 dollars for its achievement.
Under ASELSAN’s leadership and named “team Cappadocia,” aside from ASELSAN, Bilkent, Bosphorus and Middle East Technical Universities and experts in their field from Ohio State University from the United States got together. MAGIC 2010 is a competition jointly sponsored by the Australian and US Departments of Defence which brings together the world’s most powerful firms and the most successful universities in the area of unmanned vehicles. The team that wins the competition receives an award of 750,000 dollars.
With the aim of encouraging the next-generation fully autonomous unmanned land vehicles, the six teams left in the competition’s final are at the most advanced point in robot technology. Twenty three teams from five countries applied for the competition and the Turkish team succeeded in reaching the final among six teams.
To be successful in the competition a minimum 3 robots must accurately and completely explore and map an unknown area in a coordinated manner; correctly locate and identify the threats on this map and forward them to the command center and eliminate the threats within a given period.
By verifying its success in this competition, which is expected to pave the way for many new international projects, ASELSAN aims to develop and manufacture smart robots for the requirements of Turkey.
In unmanned vehicles, electronic circuits and computers take the place instead of humans using the vehicles. These circuits and computers are developed as a result of intense design activities. Because of this, ASELSAN, having developed the critical structural pieces in robot technology to be applied to all unmanned vehicles, has shown its place in creating the global technology necessary in unmanned vehicles.
ASELSAN continues its activities in integrating autonomy, arms and command control systems that are critical technologies in unmanned vehicles
The Defence Science & Technology Organisation (DSTO) in Australia and the Research Development & Engineering Command (RDECOM) in USA are taking the lead in organising MAGIC 2010.
The Multi Autonomous Ground-robotic International Challenge (MAGIC 2010) is jointly sponsored by the Australian and US Departments of Defence to attract innovative proposals from worldwide research organisations to develop next-generation fully autonomous ground vehicle systems that can be deployed effectively in military operations and civilian emergency situations.
The challenge requires competitors to submit proposals demonstrating the use of multi-vehicle robotic teams that can execute an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission in a dynamic urban environment.
Shortlisted competitors will need to field cooperatives of unmanned vehicle prototypes with the ability to autonomously and dynamically coordinate, plan and carry out tasks against changing priorities.
To complete the challenge competitors must: (i) accurately and completely explore and map the challenge area; (ii) correctly locate, classify and recognise all simulated threats; and (iii) complete all phases within 3.5 hours. The challenge event will be conducted in Australia during November 2010.
