Boeing and one of Turkey’s leading technological institutions in aerospace and aviation engineering İstanbul Technical University (ITU) announced that they were launching two grant programs. The first program shall be for undergraduate and graduate students in aeronautics and the latter shall be for academicians and on developing a curriculum for space sciences. Both programs shall strengthen the Boeing-ITU partnership and develop a comprehensive university relations program in Turkey.
Boeing scholarships shall be granted to two undergraduate and two graduate students with high level technical skills and having great interest in aviation. They shall also be granted to two faculty members of the Aeronautics Department of ITU. The aim is to create undergraduate and graduate programs in aeronautical engineering focused on aerial transportation, material and structure, control and autonomy and aircraft systems and then improve such programs. Faculty grants shall support the research activities and consultations between the other faculties known to be involved with aircraft programs and representatives of the industry.
ITU President Prof. Mehmet Karaca said, “These new scholarship programs initiated by Boeing are the result of strong and sustainable ties established between ITU and Boeing. Within this respect, ITU greatly values the intensive efforts for initiating such comprehensive cooperation resulted by student-faculty approach based on research and education. Being part of such a great partnership with a long-established company like Boeing is an honor for ITU”.
Boeing International President and Senior Vice President for Business Development and Strategy Shep Hill said, “These new scholarship programs are based on Boeing’s tradition in investing in Turkey’s educational activities. We have established cooperation with over 80 education institutions since we started supporting the elementary schools and universities in year 2000. Today, with this initiative we are proud to be partners with İstanbul Technical University and strengthen our relations based on a common vision of developing aerospace and aeronautics sciences”.
First cooperation between Boeing and ITU started in January 2012 within the scope of SESAR WP-E Long Term and Innovative Research Scholarship with a joint Project on improved cockpit systems with flight deck automation. This cooperation grew stronger with the participation of an F undergraduate to the Boeing’s internship program in Seattle in August 2012. Boeing and ITU announced in February 2013, their agreement on launching a program for mutual research and development for the benefit of aircraft passengers. First joint project shall focus on the development of an air filtering system that aims the improvement of air quality for the passengers in commercial flights. This cooperation advanced with the announcement of Aerial Transportation Management Graduate Program initiated directly with Boeing’s assistance in September.
