A long history serving high-tech markets
With over 100 years of experience, machine shops across 40 countries and two graphite plants in St Marys Pennsylvania USA, and Chongqing in China, Mersen is a worldwide leader in the production of isostatic graphite. Our production capacity is 12 000 tons and can be easily increased through minor investments to 18 000 tons. Mersen is also the leader in large size isostatic graphite, with the largest cold isostatic press available in the world, both in St Marys USA and Chongqing China.
Mersen is present in Turkey for 60 years, with a modern workshop in the city of Gebze, equipped with the latest machining tools.
Mersen in the Aerospace and Defence industries
Mersen has a strong established position in the Aeronautic and Space industries, with friction solutions for aircraft engines, carbon braking solutions and large SiC mirrors for observation satellites or re-entry thermal protection materials.
Mersen is also a major player in the Defence Industry. Its dedicated isostatic graphite grades have a high resistance to abrasion and ablation, as well as an excellent behaviour to thermal shock. It allows Mersen to be qualified in many propulsion programs. On the other side, Mersen has a unique know how to manufacture the largest isostatic graphite blocks available on the market, and still ensuring a high compressive strength throughout the blocks. These graphite grades combined with high precision machining makes it the ultimate solution for hot pressing of ceramic elements of body and vehicle armours.
Graphite has many advantages, it is resistant to thermal shock, its mechanical properties increase with temperature, and it does not melt but sublimes at 3,400ºC. It has a low CTE for geometrical stability, it is easily machined. Therefore, graphite is the best material for many high temperature applications.
