THE TRANSATLANTIC RELATIONS SUB-COMMITT OF THE NATO PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY VISITED SSM
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly Political Committee’s Sub-Committee on Transatlantic Relations visited the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) on 15 March 2011. Within the coverage of the visit a briefing was provided to the delegation on SSM’s activities, the opportunities and capabilities of the Turkish defence industry and the approach and policies of Turkey within the framework of transatlantic cooperation. In the said briefing attention was drawn to the increasing sales of the Turkish defence industry during the last period and the volume of exports. The view was also expressed that in obtaining this momentum the export thrust realized under the leadership of the SSM had an important role.
In the briefing that covered the Turkish defence industry’s increasing cooperation with allied agencies within the context of meeting the requirements of NATO, emphasis was also placed on the Turkish defence industry’s integration with Europe that has made significant contributions from the past to the present in Europe’s defence. Drawing attention to the importance of transatlantic cooperation, in order to alleviate the difficulties in this market it was again underlined that the need to work together was unavoidable.
