Preparations are underway in Turkey at STM to perform ground breaking studies on cyber security measures; their frequently published reports are generating discussion on this hot topic.
A new generation of cyber security center, the ‘Cyber Fusion Center’ will be established in Ankara by STM; such centers existing in only a few countries in the world, with this center Turkey will be able to detect and eliminate pre-emergence threats of cyber attacks before they occur.
Cyber Threats Become Increasingly more Hazardous throughout the Globe
In recent years, Turkey, as well all over the world, has seen rapidly increasing cyber threats; the size has changed now with the emergence of new and complex methods used by the ever-evolving methods of attackers. Nowadays, not only the threat but even the attack itself has become very difficult to detect. The conventional security approach against these attacks is inadequate to say the least. The conventional Cyber Security Centre is block-off the cyber-attack when the threat emerged simultaneously. Recent studies in the area of cyber security reflect that systems are designed to detect cyber threats before they occur. Well, how does this work?
The concept of ‘fusion’ is on the agenda of cyber security technology, it can be described in the same sense as with physics, a nuclear reaction of two elements coming together to create heavier elements. Similar to the example of cyber fusion, the combining of data from different sources, which are then analyzed with artificial intelligence algorithms, which make sense of data using a new generation mechanism that is emerging, called the machine learning approach.  With this method of bringing together many different disciplines, establishing a relationship between the parameters gathered through cyber threat intelligence, the threat is defined in a proactive method for early detection and thus averting malicious attacks.
STM General Manager Davut Yılmaz: “The new generation Defense Concept is being structured around Cyber Fusion”
STM provided information on this subject, General Manager Davut Yılmaz, “The adaption of fusion physics to the cyberspace realm can be described as a new generation concept of cyber defense. The conventional cyber security concept is a system of monitoring against cyber attacks and at the point of attack the system is activated, rather than if it could determine the form of the attack and try to proactively block the attacks; thus this type of product has a completely reactive approach and is ineffective against new threats in the database.
The new generation concept is one of many sources of incoming data, artificial intelligence mechanisms that uses fusion to become pre-aware of the attack, to invent defense operations automatically according to the characteristics of the attack and to counter the attacks and the threat based on the ingression, with a multi-layered, multi-disciplinary solution; is currently in use by a very small number of developed countries. This innovative and highly effective system originally developed by our engineers, I think it would be very useful for our country,” he said.
Cyber Fusion Center Anticipated to Block Cyber Attacks
With the commissioning expected in the near term, the Cyber Fusion Center is not only known just for addressing cyber threats, but also for the measures that can be taken to also address not yet identified new threats by using advanced complex methods, so that attacks can be preemptively detected.  Within STM Cyber Fusion Center; a combination of vulnerability management, cyber threat intelligence, threat defense operations, cyber operations center and incident response management capabilities, in particular will enable top-level managers to take the initiative in managing cyber incidents and innovative war games will be provided enabling the implementation of a modern cyber security approach.
The Cyber Fusion Center, on the other hand, is not only cyber security specialists; it is the collaboration of big data, data science, statistics, mathematics, natural language processing, and the involvement of experts from different disciplines such as video and audio processing.
