Carlo Marsili, Finmeccanica Chief Operating Officer Giorgio Zappa, officials and defence industry representatives.
During the event, Giorgio Zappa announced that their company will decide to produce a new model of middle- class civil helicopter in a facility in Turkey in coming days. He mentioned that Finmeccanica is in a crucial transformation process due to international collaborations, noting that they have now started to earn 60 percent of their annual revenues from foreign markets. Zappa advised Turkey to open up to markets abroad. “We don’t see your country as just a customer,” he said, claiming that they were ready to increase the level of cooperation with Turkish defence industry initiatives. Italian Ambassador to Turkey Carlo Marsili said that his country is supporting Turkey in every platform. He added that they want Turkey to become a part of the EU.
Undersecretary for the Defence Industries Murad Bayar also gave information about their recent activities and projections. The ministry is expecting defence ministers from 22 countries to participate in the eighth International Defence Fair (IDEF 07), which will take place in Ankara between May 22 and 25. Bayar, who noted that Azeri, Kazakh and Kyrgyz ministers will also attend the fair, called on Finmeccanica to expand into the Central and Middle Asian countries that were once under the influence of the Soviet Russia. “Turkey may be your partner in these countries which want to turn toward the West,” he said. "Capabilities and technologies of Finmeccanica are an important model for Turkey. New partnerships can be established with defence industries in Europe and America with this model. Turkey will continue to have strong armed forces in coming years due to the difficulties stemming from the geography it is situated in. This is an indicator that Turkey will go on with defence industry investments," he added.
