Could you make a brief overview of FİGES?
FİGES is anengineering service provider founded by Dr. Tarık Öğüt, in 1990. We provide engineering services and products with our 85 people staff. Recently, we have expanded considerably in the field of engineering consultancy services,by strengthening our staff, adding new hires and opening new offices. 
Our vision for the future includes engineering partnerships on design, prototyping, manufacturing and physics-based simulation areas and developing our own engineering projects. Currently our company has offices throughout the country, namely in Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa and Izmir.In Ankara, we have four different locations including one manufacturing workshop in OSTİM. At the same time, FİGES has been a channel partner of ANSYS, world leader in the field of simulation services, and distributor of MATLAB, the leading software on system modeling since its establishment.
What kind of engineering services are provided by your company?
We provide engineering services at almost all stages of the design and manufacturing process of a product, which might involve engineering calculations through computer aided simulation software, mechanical and/or mechatronic system design, prototype manufacturing of our own mechanical designs, turnkey manufacturing of mechatronics systems, model based system simulation and development of custom made engineering software tools.
Since its establishment, FİGES has been a well-known CAE company. We offer a wide range of services in the field of computer aided analysis, such as static structural analysis, fatigue, vibration, solid dynamics, blast and explosion, rollover and crash simulations, thermal, fluid dynamics, electromagnetic and acoustic analysis. In the recent years, FİGES has made a huge leap in mechanical design and prototype manufacturing part of the business.According to the needs of our customers, we do design work on machinery, mechanisms and test equipment, preparation of shop drawings and prototype manufacturing. We have mechanical design engineers in our team, at every office. 
The entire engineering team iswell-equipped withANSYS family of products, and is alsospecialized particularly in MATLAB to provide engineering services for various programming platforms ​​by creating algorithms. On the other hand, our mechatronics group carries out projects on test and measurement equipment design and production, system modeling and control systems applications, image processing systems development, test systems creation, technical software development and vibration measurements.
Could you elaborate a little more on your design activities?
The most important one of our completed turn-key projects waswithin the scope of MİLGEM (National Ship) project. We designed air intake and exhaust systems, prepared the shop drawings and the created component lists of Heybeliada Corvette. Another example might be a test device we have designed and built for Roketsan, with its entire mechanical and mechatronic components designed by FİGES.Since early 2012, there have been 12 prototype manufacturing projects, primarily for Aselsan and Roketsan, delivered or ongoing. Furthermore a large-scale turbine design was completedby our CFD group to be used for the recovery of waste heat and a fuel cell.
Could you talk about the recent projects undertaken in the Defence sector?
Currently FİGES reached a total of 25 employees with its four offices in Ankara, one inthe Middle East Technical University campus Technopolis and two in OSTIM. These offices operate entirely focused on the Defence industry. Our projects predominantly include analysis (structural analysis, fluid mechanics analysis, electromagnetic analysis) or can be in the form of turn-key projects including design, analysis and prototyping services as a package. Aselsan, Roketsan, MKE, FNSS and Pi Machinery are some of the companies that we provide computer aided engineeringservices. Theseservicescan be summarized as global and local strength calculations, vibration characteristics, determination of dynamic behavior under shock and random vibration loads of land and sea vehicles, or equipments (weapons, radar, etc.). Our control systems engineering team and mechanical design engineering team have successfully collaborated on a number of projects such as mechanical design and analysis of testing equipment, development of control software and data collection interface (Simulink, LabView, etc.), integration of sensor and other data collection hardware.
What are your goals and plans for the future?
We plan to move to a larger office in METU-Technopolis for a further growth in this area and aim to give full support to the Defence industry. Also Istanbul office will be moving to a 500m2 office space (planned) at Istanbul Technopark in late 2013. In addition to our current offices in OSTİM, we have recently opened a dedicated project office in OSTİM OFİM concentrating on OSTİM projects on renewable energy and railway systems.
We will be looking for opportunities to carry out R&D projects with various organizations and companies within the industry.One of our plans is to work on R&D projects that aimto manufacture an end-product, so that we start manufacturing FİGES branded and patented products.

Can Alpdogan graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) with a doctoral degree in structural mechanics.  After graduation, he worked in a structural engineering consultancy company based in the San Francisco bay area for about 4 years. During this employement he worked for the oil and gas companies, nuclear industry and Defence companies, and performed computer based structural analysis and simulations under extreme case scenarios. For more than a year, he is the manager of the structural analysis and design team of FİGES based in the Ankara office. Together with a team of 8 engineers, he provides engineering consultancy to mainly aerospace and Defence companies in the field of structural analysis, mechanical design and prototyping.
