FİGES Engineering is Expanding its Defence Activities
Defence Turkey: Could you tell us briefly about FİGES Inc.?
FİGES is an engineering service provider established by Dr. Tarık Öğüt, in 1990. In this context we provide engineering services and products with our 80 company staff. FİGES has been a channel partner of ANSYS, world leader in the field of simulation services and MATLAB, the leading software on system modeling since its establishment. Recently, we have expanded considerably, especially in the field of engineering services, by strengthening our staff and by our new offices. Our vision for the future includes engineering partnerships on design, prototyping, manufacturing and analysis areas and developing our own engineering projects. There are currently four branches of our company throughout the country, namely in Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa and Izmir.
Defence Turkey: What are the services provided by your company?
Primarily we provide engineering consultancy services in mechanical design, prototype manufacturing of mechanical systems or parts, computer aided engineering (physics based simulation) and system modeling.
According to the needs of our customers, we do design work on machinery, mechanisms and test equipment, two and three-dimensional modeling, draft shop drawings and prototype manufacturing. We have mechanical design engineers in our team. We offer a wide range of services in the field of computer aided analysis, such as static structural analysis, fatigue, vibration, solid dynamics, blast and explosion, rollover and crash simulations, thermal, fluid dynamics, electromagnetic and acoustic analysis. FİGES has strengthened its Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) engineering team from the beginning of the year both in quality and quantity, in alignment with its strategic growth plan in this area. Currently, we have seven CFD engineers, including two experts. The entire engineering staff are well-equipped with ANSYS family of products and are also specialized particularly in MATLAB to provide engineering services for various programming platforms by creating algorithms. On the other hand, our system modeling technologies group carries out projects on test and measurement equipment design and production, system modeling and control systems applications, image processing systems development, test systems creation, technical software development and vibration measurements.
Defence Turkey: Could you elaborate a little more on your design activities?
The most important one of our completed turn-key projects is within the scope of MİLGEM (National Ship) project. We designed air intake and exhaust systems, manufactured drawings and created component lists of Heybeliada Corvette. We have designed a test device, its whole electrical equipment and produced its prototype for Roketsan. Our recent turn-key projects including prototype manufacturing for Aselsan are delivered successfully.There are 12 prototype manufacturing projects delivered and ongoing through 2012. Furthermore a large-scale turbine design was completedby our CFD group to be used for the recovery of waste heat and a fuel cell.
Defence Turkey: Could you tell us about the recent projects undertaken in the defence sector?
Currently FİGES reached a total of 20 employees with its two offices in Ankara, ODTU Teknokent and OSTIM. These offices operate entirely focused on the defence industry. Our projects predominantly include analysis (structural analysis, fluid mechanics analysis, electromagnetic analysis) or can be in the form of turn-key projects including design, analysis and prototyping services as a package. Aselsan, Roketsan, MKE, FNSS and Pi Machinery are some of the companies that we provide analysis services. Analysis projects could be summarized as global and local strength calculations, vibration characteristics, determination of dynamic behavior under shock and random vibration loads of land and sea vehicles, or equipments (weapons, radar, etc.) connected to vehicles. Our control systems engineering team and mechanical design engineering team collaboratesin projects such as mechanical design and analysis of testing equipment, system modeling, development of control software and data collection interface (Simulink, LabView, etc.), integration of sensor and other data collection hardware.
Defence Turkey: What are your goals and plans for the future?
We plan to move to a larger office in METU Teknokent for a further growth in this area and aim to give full support to the defence industry. We will be opening a manufacturing shop with our expanding design team in OSTİM-Teknokent in 2013. We will seek for carrying out R&D projects with various organizations and companies as soon as possible.
One of our plans is to work on R&D projects that aims to manufacture an end-product, so we have started manufacturing FİGES branded and patented products.Our office in İstanbul, like Ankara office has grown in recent years, with increasing momentum. Our İstanbul team will receive more tasks on civil and military navigation projects for the future. On the other hand, we plan to focus on R&D activities including product and software development for the medical industry in İzmir region. We plan to increase our business activities in both Bursa and İzmir regions.
