General Evaluation on Turkish Defence Industry

Yılmaz KUBAN (R)Colonel Chief Advisor

We can express that we have a broad defence industry infrastructure that meets the equipment needs of Turkish Armed Forces nearly in all categories from submarines to aerial vehicles, armoured vehicles, rocket systems, software and electronic sub-systems. However, it is obvious that we are still at the beginning of the road in the defence industry field.

Turkey aims to minimize his dependence to foreign countries in terms of defence equipment supply by using our own sources efficiently, allocating more shares to research-development projects and focusing on original and innovative design projects. Until the end of 2010, it is planned to increase the domestic supply rate of the annual defence supply at an amount of nearly 3.5 billion US$ to 50%.

The priority areas for Innovative/Original Design for 2010 Defence Industry Strategy are determined; System Integration; Network, Command Control, Information, Satellite Systems (Sensors); Electronic Warfare; and Guidance, Missile, Control.

The export of the defence industry products has been supported through making off-set commitments active, which is one of the elements providing our companies export opportunities within the frame of the joint production projects carried out within SSM. An active support has been provided to the companies in each platform regarding the export of defence industry products, foreign country visits have been realized with the support of the government within the scope of bilateral relations on export, “National Participation” in international defence industry fairs has been realized for the export of defence industry products produced in accordance with NATO standards. IDEAS 2006 is one of them.

More than 150 projects, 50 of which are based on research and development have been carried out within the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries. Some of the related projects are: Pedestal Mounted Stinger System Project (KMS), Leopard 1A1/A1A4 Improvement Project, National Tank Production Project, ATAK Project, MİLGEM Project, A 400M Transport Aircraft Project, National İHA Development Project, Small İHA Project, Research - Development Project, Modelling/Simulation Systems (MODSİM) and so on.

I hope that you will enjoy the second issue of Defence Turkey.

All the Best for the future.
