Christening Ceremony of the second German Corvette K 130
In December 2001 the contract between the Federal Office for Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) and the ARGE K 130 for the construction and delivery of five new developed corvettes was signed. The ARGE K 130 consists of the shipyards Blohm + Voss, Nordseewerke Emden and Fr. Lürssen Werft. Lürssen designs and constructs five aft ships and delivers two corvettes to the BWB.
The second German Corvette K 130 was christened “Magdeburg” on September 6th on the facilities of Fr. Lürssen Werft in Bremen. The city of Magdeburg situated on the banks of the river Elbe is the capital of the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt with a long history starting with its first mention in 805.
More than 400 high ranked guests of Military and Political Institutions attended the ceremony at best late summer weather.
At the beginning of the official ceremony, the Chief of the German Naval Staff Vice Admiral Wolfgang Nolting inspected the Music Corps and the Guard of Honour. The following christening speeches were held by Mr. Lürssen, Mr. Wardecki (BWB) and Dr. Trümper, the mayor of the city of Magdeburg.
At 14.00 the godmother Ms. Winkler executed the christening by naming the corvette “Magdeburg” and smashing the obligatory bottle of champagne onto the hull. The naming was followed by slipping the corvette into the river Weser and mooring her at the outfitting pier. This manoeuvre was closely watched by the press and the guests.
The guests of the different institutions were given the opportunity for intense conversations until the official part of the christening ceremony ended at Lürssen Werft.
With the christening of the second ship of the class K130, in respect to export customers Lürssen once again can refer to a further successful surface combat vessel and Offshore Patrol Platform with the special capabilities for shallow and littoral water operations as well as blue water operations.
