Havelsan to Upgrade Type-22 Class Frigate Combat Management System
The tender carried out for the modernization of the British made Type-22 Frigate procured by Romania after the detachment of the combat systems in years 2004 – 2005 was finalized. The tender was awarded to the consortium led by STM, as the prime contractor, consisting of Havelsan, Aselsan and the Romanian CSR companies. According to the contract, Havelsan will be modernizing the combat systems of the Type-22 Class Frigates with the Combat Management Systems (CMS) solutions recognized as the ‘brain’. Havelsan has also undertaken the role of integrating the weapons and equipment on the frigates, so that they can operate in unison. As a result of the Project, the Romanian Naval Forces will gain the expertise and system capabilities developed indigenously by the Turkish defense industry.
Turkey’s first CMS export
Adding a brand new achievement to its successes in the Naval Forces arena, Havelsan will be realizing the first export of the Combat Management System with this tender won by the partnering companies. This first achievement accomplished is significant in that it paves the way for greater export endeavors for the Turkish defense industry, serving as an impetus to stimulate an export boom at the same time. The capabilities and accumulation of Havelsan expertise in the maritime arena, which started with GENESIS and continued with Turkey’s indigenous platforms attracts great interest friendly and allied nations as well. During the last period, STM achieved major success as it was awarded the submarine modernization tender initiated by Pakistan’s Ministry of Defense Production against the French company, which had built the submarines with Havelsan’s solutions. With Pakistan’s submarine modernization Project, these Turkish systems will be participating in the world market for the first time. There is keen anticipation that these achievements will become references for future foreign projects.
