Prof. Ismail Demir Appointed as Undersecretary for Defence Industries

Prof. Ismail Demir who served as the General Manager of Turkish Technic replaced Murad Bayar as Undersecretary for Defence Industries. Bayar served as Undersecretary of the SSM between 2004 and 2014. The statement published by the Official Gazette on the appointment said, “In the position open as Undersecretary for Defence Industries as first level staff with an +7600 additional steps, the appointment of Prof. Ismail Demir, General Manager of Turkish Technic, has been approved in accordance with Articles 59 and 60 of Law No. 657 and Article 2 of Law No. 245.” Murad Bayar, having carried out the responsibility of Undersecretary of the SSM for the last decade, transferred his duties to Prof. Ismail Demir in an official handover ceremony.  
Prof Ismail Demir was born in Elazığ in 1960. He earned his bachelors degree from Aeronautical Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 1982. After working as a research assistant at Uludağ University and ITU for 2 years, he went to the U.S.A. to complete his graduate studies. 
He earned two Master of Science degrees; one in Applied Mechanics from Michigan University and another in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University. 
Finally, he completed his Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering at Washington State University. 
Prof. Demir worked at various universities and research institutes in Saudi Arabia, the U.S.A. and Canada between 1992 and 2003. 
He became an Associate Professor in 1997; focusing on Aircraft Elements and Materials. 
At the end of 2003 he was appointed Training Director of Turkish Airlines. He served as Senior Technical Officer (vice-CEO) of Turkish Airlines from 2005 to May 2006. Then, in May 2006, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Turkish Technic Inc., which was established as a result of the re-organisation of Turkish Airlines’ aircraft maintenance departments as a wholly owned subsidiary of Turkish Airlines. 
Prof. Demir, whose papers have been published in various journals and conference proceedings, is married and has four children.
