STM Enters the “Top 100” Defence Industry Companies List in Pursuit of Aselsan, Turkish Aerospace and Roketsan
Aselsan, having entered the World’s top 100 defence industry company list in 2006 as the 93rd company, continued its steady rise in 2018 as well. In 2018, with rise of two ranks Aselsan climbed to 55th on the list. In 2017 Aselsan was listed at 57th and it was ranked 58th on the list in 2016.
In light of the data announced, Aselsan achieved a remarkable increase in its defence turnover in 2017 by 19% compared to the previous year, increasing its defence turnover to US$ 1.424 billion. During the tough 2015 year where sharp falls in oil and natural gas prices were experienced, Aselsan achieved a defence industry turnover of US$ 1.025 billion, and in 2016 the company raised its defence turnover to US$ 1.195 billion with an increase of 17%.
Aselsan Achieved an Increase of US$ 229 million in its Defence Revenue
According to the data for 2017, Aselsan’s total turnover, of which the defence sales constitute 97%, reached US$ 1.470 billion. Whereas in 2016, Aselsan’s total turnover composed of commercial and military projects amounted to US$ 1.243 billion. An increase of US$ 227 million was achieved in this one-year period while the US$ 229 million of this increase was acquired through defence sales. A decline of US$ 2 million was experienced in commercial sales compared to the previous year. Commercial sales of US$48 million with a share of 3% within the total sales in 2016 was accomplished where in 2017 the income from commercial sales fell to US$ 46 million.
Turkish Aerospace – 8% Increase in Commercial and Civilian Sales
TA remained at the 61st rank on the list in 2017 while in 2018 the company fell three ranks according to the ranking based merely on defence revenues and remained at the 64th rank on the list. Achieving a total defence turnover of US$ 1.089 billion in 2017, TA accomplished a 1% increase in its defence turnover, compared to the previous year. Achieving a defence turnover of US$ 886 million in 2015, TA increased its defence industry turnover by 22% in 2016 compared to the previous year and accumulated its defence revenues to US$ 1.083 billion. Though it seems as if no remarkable increase was achieved in defence turnover, in light of the data shared, a considerable increase stood out in civilian and commercial projects compared to the previous years. The data displays the first signals of the plans to focus more on civilian and commercial projects in the upcoming period within the scope of TA’s strategies for the new period, TA’s total turnover reached US$ 1.421 billion in 2017, where in 2016 the company’s total turnover was US$ 1.260 billion. A significant increase of US$ 161 million was achieved in total sales with an increase of 8.8% compared to the previous year in total turnover, and the greatest share within the aforesaid US$ 161 million increase was collected through commercial and civilian sales revenues in which a growth rate of 7.8% was achieved compared to the previous year. In the previous years, defence sales within the total turnover previously had an approximate share of 86% yet in 2017 the share of defence sales within the total turnover fell to 77%.
STM Enters the List for the First Time in 2018 from the 97th rank
Entering the list for the first time in 2017 through the 98th position, Roketsan managed an increase of 3% in its defence turnover in 2017, compared to the figures of the previous year and achieved defence sales of US$ 376 million. Roketsan’s total turnover entirely consisted of defence sales and the company achieved total defence sales of US$ 363 million in 2016.
Following Roketsan’s inclusion on the list for the first time in 2017, this time around the company STM made its mark by entering the list from the 97th rank in 2018. As the fourth Turkish company on the list, STM achieved defence sales figures of US$ 369 million in 2017 and accomplished a total turnover of US$ 414 million. 89% of the total turnover is composed of defence sales while the remaining 11% is composed of commercial and civilian sales.
In the 2018 list, five American, one British, two French, one Russian and one Italian company took place among the top ten on the list, and the company American Lockheed Martin remained at the top of the list with its defence turnover of US$ 47.98 billion, which is the same as the last year. The company increased its defence turnover by 10% in 2017 compared to the previous year. The US company Raytheon ranked fourth the list in 2017 and raised its position by two ranks this year and became the second company on the list. The British company BAE Systems maintained its position at the third rank in 2018 which is the same as last year.
