ACHIEVEMENTS REALIZED BY BARIŞ IN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT FOR ADVANCED COMPOSITE STRUCTURES
BARIS is a 100% private company whose main business is the design, development and production of COMPOSITES for Air, Land, Sea Vehicle, Rocket Launchers, War Heads, Pressure Vessels, Antenna Masts, Add- On Armors and Electromechanical and Electromagnetic Parts for Extreme Climates. Manufacturing techniques utilized in the company include Filament Winding, Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), Hot pressing, VARTM, Vacuum Bagging.
BARIS has been conducting a systematic approach on R&D activities since 1995. BARIS adopted a strategic management model encompassing these activities as a part of her Quality Management system which is in accordance with AQAP-2110. Within this scope, a Technology Road Map has been generated and BARIS has participated in several national and international research projects in line with this road map.
With the completion of related R&D projects in Blast protection and Armoring military platforms, a significant infrastructure of armor technology exists in BARIS today. Among these; L/S DYNA software for the analysis and simulation studies for various threats are some examples for gained know-how in this respect, Material Database including material suppliers and performances, Test Data Infrastructure including ballistic tests, environmental tests and performance tests, Mold Design, Infrastructure about pressing, bonding, coating, painting and marking are all acquired.
BARIS has gained a valuable technical knowledge and experience on filament winding by conducting various research and production programs.
The experience enhanced the technical level of BARIS and boosted the self confidence of the company to participate in new and technologically challenging projects. These genuine efforts have resulted in two products namely ‘Coolant Reservoir Assembly for Pedestal Mounted Stinger’ and ‘Rocket Grooved Composite Launcher’. Coolant Reservoir Assembly For Pedestal Mounted Stinger:
Composite High Pressure Vessels are one of the key items of BARIS’s Technology Road Map. In 1998, BARIS initiated an R&D project named “Design and Prototype Production of a Composite Pressure Vessel under High Pressure”, supported by Undersecreteriat for Defence Industries (SSM). The project was successfully completed in year 2000, through a systematic work among the contributors of the project, including SSM, RAYTHEON, and ASELSAN. With this project, BARIS was nominated as one of the finalists for the Technology Grand Award of TUBITAK-TTGV-TUSIAD (5th annual award in 2003).
The success in this R&D project resulted in a contract with RAYTHEON in 2003 for the qualification and serial production of “Coolant Reservoir Assembly (CRA)”. BARIS finalized the contract requirements successfully and achieved to be one of the two globally approved manufacturer stated on TDP of the US Government.
Within the scope of this project, the test infrastructure which includes a ‘2000 bar pressure test system’, designed and built by BARIS. It enabled conducting tests for operating pressure, proof pressure, service life, burst pressure and purity. In 2006, the related facilities of BARIS are approved as “C Type Inspection Facility” by TURKAK. As a result, BARIS became the sole candidate for the maintenance of CRAs in Turkey.
Grooved Composite Rocket Launcher;
The production of composite launcher is another critical item of BARIS’s Technology Road Map. BARIS has established her design and production infrastructure in such a way that all future composite LT (launch tube) requirements of Turkey can be addressed. By successfully completing her production activities in STINGER, ERYX and TOROS programs, BARIS started an R&D project on ‘a grooved, all composite launcher system’ in 1994. Finalizing the project’s 1st phase in 1997 and 2nd phase in 2002, the serial production of this technological product has been still continuing since 2003.
The grooved all composite launcher has superior advantages over its metal competitor in addition to the technological innovation and improvements that the product has.
With achievements in R&D activities, her grooved all composite launcher production technique obtained a certificate for a ‘patent without examination’ in 1998 with the patent number ‘TR 1998-00746B’ and the title “All Composite Grooved Launch Tube”. In May 2007, this patent which encompasses the special production of an allcomposite- launch-tube with helical grooves in a single process is registered by Turkish Patent Institute as a ‘patent with examination’. This unique patent of our defence industry is valid until 2018 and it is protected against any copying under the context of industrial property law.
ACHIVEMENTS:
Since the establishment, BARIS has been well aware of the fact that the technological level and prosperity attained are merely the result of the well-planned R&D activities performed so far. Never settling with the technological level reached and always aspiring for creating newer technologies and “doing it better”, BARIS has always believed in the sanctity of reserving increasing amounts of resources for the valuable R&D activities to be carried out. In addition to receiving support from the major institutes (R&D Dept. of the MoD, SSM, TÜBITAK-TIDEB) in Turkey for the R&D projects being managed, in 1996, BARIS has been granted the R&D Award of the Under Secretariat of Foreign Trade (DTM). BARIS, who is also awarded as being one of the fastest growing 50 technology companies in Turkey by DELOITTE in 2006, carries out a policy for research and development aiming to be a technological center for advanced COMPOSITE structures.
