Border Security Research Workshop Technology solutions to enhance systems
Ankara, Turkey 21-22 June 2007

To promote partnership between Turkey and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), a high level visit of Turkish research organizations was organized in Ispra on 28- 29 September 2006.
One of the main conclusion of the discussion was the need to organize a joint workshop, under the auspices of the EU Presidency (Germany) aimed at debating upcoming trends and needs in security research.
It is therefore proposed to structure
the workshop around the theme of border
security.
This
would include several themes in
the area of cross border systems interoperability
and standardization in
security related areas such as EPassport
including biometrics.
The Border Security Research Workshop is a joint initiative of the German Presidency of the EU, JRC Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC), and TÜBITAK, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
The workshop format shall include several keynote speeches, starting with the EU Presidency, and continuing with the representatives of participating actors: Tubitak, the JRC. Further key note speeches will be delivered by the DG RELEX on neighbourhood policy, by DG JLS on establishing a space of freedom, justice and security, by the European agency for external borders FRONTEX on integrated border management, by DG ENTR on the European Security research program within FP VII. Next will be a sequence of presentations by EU industry, e. g. by the German company Heimann on advanced systems for control at airports, the Italian company FINMECCANICA on maritime border surveillance, by the French company SAGEM on integrating biometrics in border control.
The thematic presentations, at technical level, should prompt at the main challenges to be faced in security research hinting at possible solutions and identifying possible areas of cooperation. This part would be covered mainly by Tubitak, JRC scientists and researchers from national research organizations in the EU, in particular from Germany.
This workshop aims at debating the challenges to be faced in Border Security Research, hinting at possible solutions and identifying possible areas of cooperation.
An important element of the workshop will be the concluding Round Table, where high level delegates meet to elaborate a strategy to foster collaboration between EU and Turkey, in the key area of border security.
