The bow section (Section 50), containing submarine torpedo tubes, was produced for the first time in Turkey with domestic and national resources, under STM’s engineering and coordination, which only a limited number of countries in the world can produce. The first Section 50 produced for Reis class submarines was delivered to Gölcük Shipyard Command.
Another critical phase was completed in the New Type Submarine Project, initiated by the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) for the Turkish Naval Forces Command, one of the most effective navies in the world. The bow section (Section 50), containing submarine torpedo tubes, was produced for the first time at Gürdesan Shipyard in Turkey with domestic and national resources, under the engineering and coordination of STM. The first Section 50, produced for Reis class submarines, was delivered on September 13, 2021 from Gürdesan Shipyard in Yalova to Gölcük Shipyard Command. The first Section 50, produced with national resources, will be integrated into Murat Reis, the 3rd New Type Submarine.
Prof. DEMİR: “This will be a critical experience on the path to National Submarine production.”
Delivering a speech at the delivery ceremony, President of Defense Industries Prof. İsmail DEMİR said, “We have successfully completed another critical phase in the New Type Submarine Project (Reis Class Submarines), which will be the most modern submarine platform of the Turkish Navy. We feel proud to produce Section 50, the most critical part of submarines where the torpedo tubes are located, for the first time in our country. The domestic production of the bow section where the torpedo tubes are located is an important gain on the path to National Submarine production.”
STM General Manager Özgür GÜLERYÜZ: “We have indigenized 33 systems for Reis Class Submarines.”
STM General Manager Özgür GÜLERYÜZ stated that a historic success was achieved in the production of Reis Class Submarines that will increase the deterrence capacity of the Turkish Naval Forces in the Blue Homeland. “We accomplished the first delivery of Section 50, which we continue to produce for Reis Class Submarines. We achieved in exceeding the local content rate targeted in the project. Within the scope of the New Type Submarine Project, we have indigenized 33 systems to date. As STM, we also contributed to the capacity building of domestic contractors by working with 19 domestic companies as part of the New Type Submarine Project. STM has once again demonstrated that it continues to successfully build its ecosystem regarding the indigenization on the path to national submarine production. On this occasion, I commemorate our former Naval Projects Director, Mazlum Savaş ONUR, who pioneered the realization of the project, and congratulate all my colleagues who contributed to the project.”
3 more Section 50s to be delivered by March 2022
The production of Section 50, which was delivered initially for the 3rd submarine, started in 2018. Under the coordination of STM, the nozzle holes of the related submarine were machined and the necessary welding for tubes was made. After the painting and assembly processes, Section 50 successfully completed the acceptance tests in a short period of time with zero error performance. Section 50 of the 4th, 5th and 6th submarines in the ongoing project under cooperation with STM and Gürdesan will be delivered by March 2022.
Reis Class Submarines to be able to launch 8 guided missiles
Section 50, the most critical part of the Reis class submarines, which will be the most modern submarine platform of the Turkish Navy, incorporates submarine main weapons and systems that allow the launch of guided missiles. Thanks to the Section 50 produced, Reis Class Submarines will be armed with eight 533mm torpedo tubes. Within the scope of the project, the delivery of six Reis Class Submarines will start to be made as of 2022. The section containing the torpedo tubes of the first two submarines was produced by the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the main contractor of the project. The Section 50 section, which will be located in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th submarines, is being produced for the first time in Turkey at Gürdesan Shipyard under the coordination of STM, the main subcontractor.
