Turkish Armored Vehicle NMS 4×4 EWB on NATO Roads
NMS EWB, a newly extended wheelbase version of the standard NMS 4×4, was first unveiled at IDEF 2023. With its longer wheelbase, the vehicle offers significantly increased interior volume, payload capacity, and configuration flexibility. The passenger capacity has expanded from 7 to 11, enabling more efficient transport of personnel, mission modules, and additional equipment.
The extended wheelbase enhances driving stability and weight distribution under harsh terrain conditions—an especially critical advantage in the dynamic environmental conditions of the Baltic region.
Export to Estonia
Nurol Makina has achieved a major export milestone by delivering its extended wheelbase NMS 4×4 (EWB) to Estonia. The vehicle was selected as a result of an international tender initiated by the Estonian Defense Forces.
Competing against nine companies in the 4×4 armored vehicle tender, Nurol Makina secured a contract for 100 vehicles based on the standard NMS platform. This success is seen as a key element in the company's strategy to expand into Europe, underlining its trusted partnerships and reliable defense solutions.
Performance and Capabilities
With STANAG 4569- compliant ballistic and mine protection, a robust diesel engine, and an independent suspension system, the NMS EWB offers high performance. These features deliver enhanced mobility, protection, and modular mission adaptability to Estonian troops, in line with NATO standards.
According to the agreement, deliveries will be completed within 18 months, with the first units scheduled for deployment to the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Estonian Defense Forces in 2024.
Strategic Highlights
**Three Key Aspects of Nurol Makina's Export Success with the NMS EWB:**
Technical Superiority: The vehicle’s extended wheelbase, modular design, and off-road capabilities effectively meet operational requirements.
Strategic Partnership: Securing a high-volume order from a NATO member like Estonia highlights Nurol Makina's status as a reliable export partner.
Regional Expansion: This entry into the Baltic region lays the groundwork for joint initiatives and deeper engagement with the European defense market.
Government Recognition
In June 2024, Estonian President Alar Karis visited Nurol Makina’s facilities, personally test-driving the vehicle on the proving ground. He expressed satisfaction with the collaboration and praised the vehicle’s quality, timely delivery, and field performance.
NATO Interoperability: As both Estonia and Turkey are NATO allies, the emphasis on interoperability was also reflected in the President’s remarks.
Contract and Delivery
Under a contract signed with the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) on October 18, 2023, 100 units of the NMS EWB were ordered. For the first time, the EWB (Extended Wheelbase) model was exported to Estonia.
Operational Impact
As of March 2025, approximately 50 vehicles had already been delivered—praised by the Estonian Ministry of Defence as a “significant achievement.” The Minister also noted that the vehicles were “performing excellently.”
Technical & Strategic Advantages
EWB (Extended Wheelbase): Offers increased interior volume and improved capacity for personnel/equipment transport.
High Protection: Features STANAG 4569 protection, a diesel engine, independent suspension, and a V-shaped hull suitable for harsh climate conditions.
Modularity: Easily adaptable for roles such as reconnaissance, command & control, troop transport, or ambulance.
European Vision
Emre AKIN, Nurol Makina's Chief of Operations (Europe), highlighted that the technical customization and fast delivery for Estonia showcased the company's strategic advantage in Europe. The vehicle’s structure was resized, layouts adjusted, and configurations optimized to meet Estonia’s environmental and operational needs.
Although the delivery schedule was originally planned for 18 months, all units were delivered ahead of time. The Estonian Ministry of Defense described the swift fulfillment as a “successful and exemplary process.”
